Fund Development Resources - Are You Ready for a Planned Giving Program?

Planned Giving Defined
According to Wikipedia, “planned giving” is “an area of fundraising that refers to several specific gift types that can be funded with cash or property. Planned gifts are referred to as such because they require more planning, negotiation and counsel than an outright gift.” This can be loosely translated as “it take s a lot more time, energy and effort than just getting a regular donation.” According to Planned Giving Today, It generally takes from seven to ten years to begin receiving significant current dollars for your organization. Smaller nonprofits that are in a fundraising fix often think they can just add "Bequests Accepted" into their marketing materials and the big bucks will start rolling in. It also appears that some serous education is needed to get up to speed on the different types of planned giving which can include:

Charitable Bequests -a distribution from an estate to a charitable organization through an individual's last will and testament.

Charitable Trusts & Annuities an arrangement between a donor and a non-profit organization, where the donor takes a partial tax deduction for the gift and then receives an income stream from the non-profit. There are many types of trusts and annuities including:

Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA)
Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT)
Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT)
Charitable Lead Annuity Trust (CLAT)
Charitable Lead Unitrust (CLUT)

Factors to Consider
Planned giving officers and professional advisors are usually needed to set up and run a planned giving program - a major factor to consider when trying to establish your organization's readiness. The next biggest factor to consider is the size and quality of your donor base. 70% of planned giving comes from donors who have given sizeable amounts annually for a number of years. Your donors are not likely to leave a significant portion of their assets to you if they have not been donating significantly already. It's good to look at your organization from a donor's perspective; below are some questions to consider before taking the Planned Giving plunge:
1. How visible is your organization? Does the general public know your organization's name?
2. Does your organization have a well-though out and publicized strategic plan?
3. Does your volunteer Board of Directors have limited terms of office and represent a cross-section of the community?
4. Do your employees receive appropriate compensation and benefits?
5. Is your organization stable and ha sit had experience managing larger contributions?
6. Does your organization publish an annual report and have it available to the public?
7. Is your organization able to keep its fundraising expenses within acceptable levels compared to other organizations?
